Robbie Fowler has raised his doubts over Darwin Nunez and stated that he is ‘not sure’ about the Liverpool striker after his side’s 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday at Anfield.

The 23-year-old started in his now usual left-sided inside forward role for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and he was taken off after 65 minutes without getting on the scoresheet.

Darwin Nunez has scored four Premier League goals since the turn of the year and he hasn’t netted in his last five.

In the summer, he came with a big price tag on his head, but from the get-go, it was obvious that this aggressive powerhouse of a talent was very raw.

It has showcased in his game because he has lacked that killer first touch, finish and composure in the final third – Ian Wright has backed him to explode next season.

Over the course of the season, Nunez has nine Premier League goals from 29 matches, and whilst Fowler thinks he is a ‘handful’, he doesn’t think he will reach the heights fans are expecting him to reach, as he told Premier League Productions (06/05/23 at 6:30 pm).

“Up to now he is (too wasteful),” said Fowler. “I said before the show, he will be a player. He will be a handful and he will take chances. And he will score goals.

“But to the level Liverpool fans think he will score the goals? I am not sure we will see that.”

NUNEZ WILL COME GOOD

The Uruguay international has all the qualities in his locker, but that rawness to his game just needs to be finely tuned.

Come next season, when he has settled in and had 12 months of Premier League football under his belt, then he will come good.

Plus, in Klopp’s system, near-one every forward player cooks, look how much Cody Gakpo has improved since joining in January?! Patience is required with Nunez.
