Jose Mourinho always knew that Tottenham Hotspur manager target Xabi Alonso would become a top coach.
A report mentioned on Wednesday that the Bayer Leverkusen boss was indeed the club’s No.1 target.
As it seems Tottenham Hotspur are hell-bent on appointing Xabi Alonso as their next manager, Jose Mourinho always tipped him to rise to the top.
What Jose Mourinho said about Tottenham manager target Xabi Alonso
The Spaniard has done a phenomenal job at the BayArena, leading a struggling Leverkusen side to sixth place in the Bundesliga as well as a place in the Europa League semi-final.
Considering Alonso’s football IQ was always top-drawer, he was expected to thrive as a coach. But the ex-Real Madrid legend has proven that during his time in Germany so far.
Jose Mourinho, always used to manage Tottenham manager Xabi Alonso once famously said that he would become a top coach.’

“He became a player, a top player. His position on the pitch and his knowledge of the game, very high. He played in Spain, in England and in Germany. And he was coached by [Pep] Guardiola with Bayern, by myself in Real Madrid, by [Carlo] Ancelotti in Real Madrid, by [Rafael] Benitez in Liverpool”, he said in a press conference for Top Eleven.
“So, I think if you put all this together, Xabi has the conditions to be a very good coach.”
HITC View: Stamps of approval do not get better than that
While Jose Mourinho did not particularly do his finest work at Tottenham, he remains one of the best coaches of all time and if he always saw a top manager in Xabi Alonso, perhaps Daniel Levy should take his word for it.
The fact that Alonso has proven the Portuguese icon right instead of stumbling in his first job at senior level in Europe proves that he is cut from the right cloth.
While there are more seasoned coaches in the market, it may be a risk to miss out on a true wonderkid in the managerial world.
