Tim Sherwood has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur “could do a lot worse” than making Roberto De Zerbi their new manager.

The pundit and former Spurs boss told Premier League Productions, via Optus Sport, that the Italian is “the real deal”.

As well as backing De Zerbi for Tottenham, Sherwood said the Brighton & Hove Albion boss is also a good shout for Chelsea.

Spurs have been linked with the 43-year-old over the past few weeks as their search for a new manager continues.

A month ago, The Telegraph reported that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was eyeing the Seagulls head coach.

And earlier in April, Alasdair Gold claimed that Spurs had reached out to De Zerbi’s camp about a move.

Brighton’s last match saw them run out 2-1 winners over Frank Lampard’s Blues at Stamford Bridge.

This prompted Sherwood to joke that Chelsea shouldn’t have let him out of the stadium grounds.

“He’s an incredible manager,” he said on Premier League Productions.

“Listen, if I was Chelsea I would have locked the gates, kept him at the Bridge and not let him leave until he’d agreed to join!

“From a bias side, Tottenham are looking for a new manager and they could do a lot worse than this man. He is the real deal.”

Our view

De Zerbi really has worked wonders at Brighton and it’s no surprise that Tottenham are being linked with him.

Spurs have tried with high-profile serial winners and it simply hasn’t worked out.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino was a revelation at Tottenham as he was a young, hungry manager who grew with the club.

This is what Spurs need again, instead of someone who may just be thinking he’s doing the club a favour by being there.

Admittedly, Tottenham may now be thinking twice about bringing in another fiery manager, but we’ll see what happens in summer.

Obviously we’ll have to see whether De Zerbi even fancies a move to N17, or whether he fancies another season at Brighton, potentially in Europe.
