Newcastle United are continuing to show a real interest in signing Florian Wirtz after scouting the Bayer Leverkusen star.
That is according to a report from the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle scouted Wirtz on Thursday night.
Wirtz featured for Bayer Leverkusen in a 1-1 draw against Union Saint-Gilloise in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Wirtz was the hero for Leverkusen as he curled home a beautiful equaliser to help Xabi Alonso’s men avoid defeat.
It’s even claimed that Newcastle scouted Wirtz again on Sunday as Leverkusen drew 0-0 with Wolfsburg.
Newcastle may have been a little disappointed though as Wirtz only started from the bench and came on with half an hour to play.
The repeated checks from Newcastle suggests that the Magpies are lining up Wirtz as a major summer target.
Leverkusen don’t want to sell but Newcastle could have big money and Champions League football on offer.

Other Premier League clubs want Newcastle United target Florian Wirtz
Newcastle appear to want a playmaking midfielder and there have been strong links to Leicester City’s James Maddison.
Wirtz offers another option though and the 19-year-old has been in impressive form since returning from a major injury.
Four goals and eight assists in just 17 appearances this term goes to show what Wirtz can do with his immense ability.
Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Wirtz is one of the top teenagers around and other clubs want him.
Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking about Wirtz’s future on YouTube in March, suggested that Liverpool were especially keen on the youngster.
Romano added that Real Madrid and Barcelona were also keen but Wirtz wanted to wait until the summer of 2024 to make a move.
That means Newcastle’s task will be very hard this summer, but the Magpies may just try their luck for Wirtz.
