Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Burnley manager Vincent Kompany in recent weeks.

Spurs are currently on the lookout for a new permanent head coach in wake of Antonio Conte’s departure.

Speculation linking Tottenham and Kompany has intensified in recent days.

The Sun reported that Spurs have made the “maverick” manager their No. 1 candidate.

Kompany is apparently interested in a switch to Tottenham too.

Dean Jones has now written on GiveMeSport that a “good contact” told him the links are genuine.

The transfer insider also gave his opinion on claims that Kompany is Tottenham’s top target.

“I think it’s logical that his name comes into the conversation given the way he has made a mark as a coach so far,” said Jones.

“And one good contact told me there is something in Spurs’ interest.

“But as a number one target, I am slightly sceptical.

“He hasn’t managed in the Premier League and he is currently employed.

“I can’t see why he would be ahead of other targets that have a stronger CV.”

Our view

Spurs have tried appointing high-profile, marquee managers, and it hasn’t worked out.

Tottenham would be better off with the Mauricio Pochettino model, albeit with another boss.

This way, it would ensure a blank slate as a new manager seeks to write a new chapter with Spurs.

Kompany certainly ticks a lot of boxes for Tottenham, but his lack of experience could be a big sticking point.

In addition, Spurs and Burnley will have wildly differing expectations next season.

For the Clarets, surviving relegation will likely be the bottom line in their first campaign back.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will be eager for top four and silverware, or at least a good cup run.

Kompany will be under extreme pressure at Spurs, and at this stage of his career, he doesn’t need that.
