Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Sporting CP’s Pedro Goncalves in recent days.
Earlier this week, 90Min reported that Spurs have been closely watching the 24-year-old over the past few months.
Apparently, Tottenham were first drawn to Goncalves – also known as Pote – while scouting Pedro Porro.
The Portuguese media has also published stories saying Tottenham have set their sights on Goncalves.
Record have reported that Spurs had sent scouts to watch him in action against Juventus on Thursday night.
Goncalves delivered a solid display despite the Bianconeri winning 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.
A Bola – via Sport Witness – reported that the Portuguese has a €80m (around £70m) release clause in his contract, which runs until 2026.
Our view
Goncalves is an outstanding player who has enjoyed an absolutely outstanding season.
He has registered 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Sporting this term.
Tottenham fans will have especially appreciated his goal near the halfway line against bitter rivals Arsenal.
Goncalves’ effort helped Sporting go to penalties and subsequently knock the Gunners out of the Europa League.
For what it’s worth, Tottenham could certainly do with more goals and creativity in their attacking ranks.
Son Heung-min is now in his 30s and Spurs have to start thinking about a long-term replacement for him.
Goncalves is heading into his prime and has shown he can deliver at the highest level.
The opportunity to play in the Premier League could well appeal to him.
And with Porro already at Tottenham, Goncalves would have a contact who can help him acclimatise to life at N17.
