Joao Cancelo is reportedly set to return to Manchester City this summer with Bayern Munich unwilling to sign the defender on a permanent deal regardless of the cost.
According to Kicker, the Bundesliga giants have been impressed with what the Portuguese international has done since joining the club on loan. However, Thomas Tuchel is unwilling to authorise a permanent signing this summer based on the defender’s character.
As per the report, Bayern and City have both seen firsthand how Cancelo’s mood can swing in a negative direction when he isn’t regularly selected for games, and this has led to the Bavarian club passing up on the option to sign the defender for good this summer.
Cancelo is expected to leave City regardless of if he returns to Manchester or not in the transfer window, with interest likely to be high in the 28-year-old despite his £70m price tag as Pep Guardiola looks to offload the former Juventus star.

Indeed, Cancelo is set to be City’s biggest departure in the upcoming market, and whilst Bayern might not want to sign the fullback, there is still set to be a massive amount of interest given just how good the defender is when playing in the right system.
As we know, Cancelo became arguably the most complete fullback in world football under Guardiola at City. And whilst the pair have had a falling out, the defender could still establish himself as a star at one of the biggest clubs in Europe in the new season.
City must begin planning for Cancelo sale amid Manchester return

Cancelo returning to City felt like a possibility when news broke that Bayern’s option-to-buy clause was valued at £70m, and for the Manchester side, they must now start putting plans into motion to sell the defender for good before the start of pre-season.
Whilst there’s always a chance that the Portuguese star could return to the City set-up, it will take a miracle to convince a manager as stubborn as Guardiola to bring the defender back into the picture, who could do with a clean break and a new start in football away from Manchester.
