Newcastle United are a ‘long shot’ in the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane but a cross-Premoer League switch cannot be entirely ruled out, according to former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy.

If you were to draw up something of a Harry Kane-themed Venn diagram – with the clubs capable of affording him on the left and those who actually need him on the right – then very few would fall in the middle.

Manchester City have Erling Haaland. Liverpool have greater needs elsewhere. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is never going to sell his star man to London rivals Arsenal or Chelsea. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, have all-but admitted that Kane’s reported £100 million price-tag is well beyond their means (The Sun).

That, then, leaves Manchester United as one of the few feasible destinations; a deep-pocketed club with a number nine right at the top of their summer wishlist.

But what about Newcastle? A team with Saudi Arabian backing and the ambition to match. Cundy feels that St James’ Park is unlikely to be too high on Kane’s list of priorities. But securing a top four spot at Spurs’ expense might just change things.

Would Harry Kane leave Tottenham for Newcastle United?

“I don’t think it would be his first choice,” Cundy argues (talkSPORT, 27 March, 11pm). “I am not sure Newcastle would be looking to do any more business up top. I do think it is a bit of a long shot.

“I’m not sure Newcastle would go in for him, and I’m not sure it would be option he would look at if he does move on.

“But if they get Champions League football and who’s to say they wont?…”

Kane, who has become Spurs and England’s all-time record goalscorer since the turn of the year, is due to become a free agent when his contract expires in the summer of 2024.

Given that he does not have a single trophy to show for all those years of loyal service at club and international level, the 29-year-old – if he is to depart – is likely to prioritise a club who can offer a greater shot at silverware.
