Action cinema has its fair share of legendary heroes, whether your favorite is John McClane or Snake Plissken. When it comes to more modern examples of the very best characters in the genre though, there’s no getting around it: John Wick is the man.

It’s hard to imagine anybody other than Keanu Reeves in the now-iconic role which he began tackling in the original film in 2014.

Since then, we’ve seen the gun-fu and mind-blowing fight sequences ramped up to incredible levels, with John Wick: Chapter 4 upping the ante yet again. As well as a performance from the late, great Lance Reddick, fans also welcome Bill Skarsgård to the franchise and say hello again to Laurence Fishburne, among others.

You’re sure to have a blast but considering we’re four movies in, it’s understandable for viewers to be particularly concerned for Mr. Wick this time around. So, let’s clarify something… Does John Wick die in John Wick: Chapter 4?

Does John Wick die in John Wick: Chapter 4?

Yes, John Wick does die in the final act of John Wick: Chapter 4, serving as the franchise’s most startling and unexpected moment yet.

The ending finds John and Caine (played by Donnie Yen) pit against each other in a duel with pistols. John is shot three times on different parts of his body but his reluctance to shoot the final shot results in his being set free from under the High Table.

Unfortunately, his bravery comes at the ultimate sacrifice and he dies from his wounds.

The film ends with Winston and the Bowery King at his grave and they’ve honored his wish, ensuring that “Loving Father” is on his tombstone. He previously told the pair that this is how he wants to be remembered.

‘He’s almost a complete psychopath’

Although John lives to see another day by the final moments of the fourth film, Ian McShane (who plays Winston) and Lance (Charon) recently spoke to ScreenRant about Bill’s villain, the Marquis Vincent de Gramont, being such a huge threat.

“He’s six foot five, he has appalling suits, he’s Swedish, and he speaks nineteen languages,” Ian said. “And he’s one Skarsgård and he’s got 1000 brothers. No, I love Bill. I think Bill is great in the [movie], crazy as a loon.”

Lance also added: “But also he’s almost a complete psychopath and it feels like he has more carte blanche to do what he wants from the High Table than any villain yet.”

John Wick’s last rodeo?

Director Chad Stahelski has explained during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter that there are no concrete plans for a fifth installment as of yet.

He acknowledged that following the Japanese press tour – likely in September – he and Keanu will ask each other what they think they should do next.

“We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins,” he clarified. “If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.”

John Wick: Chapter 4 is now in theaters.
