Fito Olivares reportedly dies aged 75
A Facebook post from San Antonio’s Tejano station KXTN on Friday, March 17 reported Olivares’s untimely death. “Today we lost a legend,” the post read. “Please keep his family, friends, and fans around the world in your prayers.”
According to El Principal, Olivares died aged 75 following a battle with cancer. He is survived by his son Rudy Olivares, who is a Latin Grammy-nominated musician.

Fito Olivares, born Rodolfo Olivares, was born in Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1947. After starting to play professionally at the age of 16, Olivares played with and wrote music for, groups like Duet Estrella as well as Tam and Tex before forming his own band Fito Olivares Y La Pura Sabrosura in Houston in 1980.
He was a highly-respected saxophonist in the Latino music industry and known for hits like Juana La Cubana, La Gallinita, and El Cholesterol. His Cumbias have long been staples of Mexican wedding and celebrations.
