Newcastle‘s Kieran Trippier was named in the England squad by Gareth Southgate earlier today, but there was no room for Solly March.
The Magpies – according to 90min – are keen to sign the Brighton No.7 this summer, with Eddie Howe said to be a huge fan of the 28-year-old.
March has been in fantastic form this season, and Southgate gave an interesting answer when asked why he was left out of the squad for England’s upcoming EURO 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.
What’s the story?
Well, the BBC quote Southgate as saying: “Solly is a player we know well but at the moment I don’t see him ahead of Rashford, Grealish, Saka in those positions on the field. They are hard calls.”
The Newcastle target has scored seven goals – while also providing four assists – in 25 appearances so far this season, which is an excellent return.

However, it is hard to argue against Southgate’s reasoning.
Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka are among the best attackers in Europe, so March will have to maintain his form over an extended period of time if he is to get in amongst a trio of that quality.
Newcastle should be wary of Solly March
According to Graeme Bailey – a respected journalist in England – Howe “loves” March.
Despite that admiration, we believe Newcastle should be wary of signing the Brighton winger.
Before this season, March had only scored two goals in 142 Premier League appearances, so Newcastle need to be wary of signing a potential flash in the pan, especially one who turns 29 in July.
Should the Brighton star continue his form next season, then we see no reason why Howe shouldn’t submit a bid.
For now – however – it would be a risk to sign March off the back of one strong campaign.
