CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has told CaughtOffSide that Newcastle United may have to pay £40 million to sign Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney in the summer transfer window.
Jacobs has said that Newcastle want to sign Tierney from Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer of 2023.
The journalist has added that the Magpies could have to pay as much as £40 million in transfer fees for the £110,000-a-week (SalarySport) Scotland international left-back.
Potential transfer fee Newcastle United need to pay for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney
Jacobs said: “Tierney held face-to-face talks with Arteta to better understand his future and was encouraged to fight for his place. So an exit is not guaranteed.
“Even Arteta is still undecided whether to let him go, but it will also come down to whether Tierney is satisfied to be a squad player.
“Arsenal would demand a fee in excess of the £25m they paid Celtic in 2019. £35-40m is probably the starting point, especially given Tierney is healthily contracted until 2026. Let’s not forget he was Real Madrid-linked for £50m only a year ago.
“Newcastle’s interest is genuine. Left-back is an area Eddie Howe knows he needs to strengthen.
“I am told Tierney ideally wants European football still, which should rule out Aston Villa despite some links. Villa boss Unai Emery was the manager who brought Tierney to Arsenal, so it’s natural he’s keeping tabs on the situation.”

Encouraging for Newcastle
In our view, if Arsenal are happy with £40 million for Kieran Tierney, then Newcastle United should get a deal done in the summer transfer window.
Tierney is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League when he is fully fit and playing regularly.
That a big club like Arsenal signed him from Celtic in the first places shows how good the Scotsman is.
Injuries have affected the left-back at Arsenal, but we know that when in form, Tierney is a marvel to behold.
Mason Mount latest
Another player who Newcastle United have been linked with is Mason Mount.
According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in signing England international midfielder Mount from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool and Manchester United are also reported to be interested in the Chelsea star.
The Daily Mail have claimed that Mount earns £80,000 per week as salary and is looking for £240,000 per week as his wages.
Former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea are reportedly willing to pay the Englishman a weekly salary of £170,000.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has given his take on the situation on Mount on Twitter, saying that it is now looking increasingly likely that he will leave Chelsea at the end of the season.
