Liverpool are back in for Barcelona star Gavi but face a battle with Manchester City ahead of the summer transfer window.

That’s according to The Times, who claim that Liverpool and City are keeping close tabs on Gavi’s contract situation.

It’s suggested that both clubs have wanted Gavi for a while but thought they had little chance of a deal.

Liverpool and City now have renewed hope though as Barcelona are having real contract difficulties with Gavi.

Barcelona handed Gavi a huge new deal worth €8million-a-year – around £135,000-a-week – alongside a staggering €1billion (£880million) release clause.

However, that deal could be ruled null and void as La Liga continue to restrict Barcelona’s spending and registration rights.

If that happens, Gavi will go back to his youth contract and be available for nothing – sparking interest from City and Liverpool.

It’s also noted that Liverpool did make a move for Gavi last summer but he chose to stay with Barcelona.

Liverpool target Gavi has the world at his feet

Liverpool fans have been excited about Jude Bellingham potentially heading to Anfield but if any young midfielder can rival him, it’s Gavi.

The 18-year-old is an absolute phenomenon and won the 2022 Golden Boy award.

Gavi excelled at the World Cup with Spain and already has 17 caps to go along with more than 80 first-team appearances for Barcelona.

Hailed as ‘spectacular’ by Xavi, Gavi is supposed to be the future of the Barcelona midfield alongside fellow youngster Pedri.

Yet unless Barcelona can get this contract ratified, they may well risk losing Gavi to another club – and a move to the Premier League would surely be on the cards.

Liverpool will be primed and ready to strike for the teenager if he becomes available and signing him would almost make fans forget all about the Bellingham pursuit.
