Jonathan David will probably never score an easier hat-trick.

Two penalties either side of a point-blank tap-in. The history books will not remember how the goals went in, however. All they will show is that, during a thrilling 3-3 Ligue 1 draw with Lyon this weekend, David became Lille’s all-time record goalscorer in the 21st century, succeeding Eden Hazard’s tally of 50.

Did we mention the Canada international also joined Kylian Mbappe at the top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts, while also becoming the first Lille player to hit a treble since Nicolas Pepe five years ago?

In all competitions this term, David’s tally stands at 20 goals in 26 starts. Eight of those have come in his last five games. If this is indeed to be the striker’s final season at Lille, then he’s certainly bowing out in the right way.

Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham like Lille striker Jonathan David

“In England, when I watch the matches, every stadium is full each time. As a player, it motivates you even more,” David told La Voix du Nord recently; opening the door to a Premier League switch this summer.

“I think it’s possible, very possible (that I move to England). I don’t know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League. It could well be the Premier League. It’s a very nice atmosphere.”

David certainly won’t be short of offers, and certainly not from English shores.

Aston Villa, per 90Min, is one potential destination. David may be aiming a little higher up the food chain, however, with ambitious Newcastle United another chasing the former Genk frontman (The Chronicle). A prolific number nine could potentially take Eddie Howe’s overachievers to a whole new level.

And do not rule out Tottenham Hotspur either. Spurs are long-time admirers of the one-time Arsenal target, Fabrizio Romano reports, and may be forced into the striker market with Harry Kane’s future uncertain.

None of David’s finishes against Lyon will make the Goal of the Season cut. Not that anyone at Lille will care too much about that. David might not be a scorer of ‘great’ goals but he is increasingly proving himself to be a ‘great goalscorer’.
