How many Oscars did Top Gun: Maverick win?

Top Gun: Maverick only took home one Oscar for Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards.

It was up against stiff competition, as the Top Gun sequel competed for the award against All Quiet On The Western Front, Avatar: The Way Of Water, The Batman, and Elvis.

However, Top Gun: Maverick was named the ultimate winner. This win comes 36 years after the original Top Gun (1986) lost out at both sound awards. At the 1987 Oscars, Top Gun was nominated for Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Sound, but lost out to Aliens and Platoon, respectively.

Accepting Top Gun: Maverick’s only award of the night were Mark Weingarten, James H Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon, and Mark Taylor. Weingarten already has an Oscar under his belt for his work sound mixing Dunkirk. Taylor also received an award for sound mixing for another British war epic, 1917.

The original Top Gun was nominated for four Oscars, also only taking home one. It won the Best Original Song award for “Take My Breath Away,” performed by Berlin.

Top Gun: Maverick was nominated in six Oscars categories

Despite only winning one Oscar, Top Gun: Maverick was one of the most nominated films of the night. It was nominated in the following categories:

Top Gun sequel failed to secure wins despite many nominations

Top Gun: Maverick was one of the summer’s biggest hits. Not only was it commercially successful, surpassing $1bn at the box office, but was applauded by critics. As such, Top Gun: Maverick was nominated in multiple categories at the major awards shows.

At last month’s BAFTAs ceremony, the action sequel was nominated in four categories: Cinematography, Editing, Sound, and Special Visual Effects. It took home no BAFTAs on the night.

The movie was also nominated for two Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Original Song. It didn’t take home any Golden Globes either.

Top Gun: Maverick is now streaming on Paramount+.
