Fans of dark comedy will no doubt be familiar with the name Martin McDonagh. If not, they would be wise to get acquainted with the British-Irish filmmaker’s work.

His directorial feature debut In Bruges was released back in 2008 and has since gone on to be regarded as a modern classic, praised for its relentlessly hilarious writing, performances, and an uncompromised mean streak.

Returning with an all-star cast for sophomore effort Seven Psychopaths in 2012 and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2017, he has proven that his debut was far from some fluke.

Attendees of the 79th Venice International Film Festival were treated to his fourth movie in September, which was championed by critics. Now, it is being tipped as a major Oscars contender. Let’s take a look at where to watch McDonagh’s latest dark comedy.

‘A very simple break-up story’

Martin recently sat down to discuss the forthcoming film with Deadline and revealed the motivations behind the project:

“I just wanted to tell a very simple break-up story. And to see how far a simple comedic and dark plot could go. Bringing back Colin and Brendan after 14 years was of the utmost importance in my mind—they were always going to be those two friends falling out. That was the original germ of the idea.”

Both Colin and Brendan starred centre-stage in the aforementioned In Bruges, so audiences will no doubt be thrilled to see them collaborate with the filmmaker yet again.

The Banshees of Inisherin opens in theaters on Friday, October 21st 2022.
