David Moyes is under pressure at West Ham United but there is no chance that Jose Mourinho leaves Roma to take the Scot’s place in the Premier League dugout, former England international Darren Bent tells talkSPORT (7 March, 5pm).

Mourinho, back in 2021, was quick to dismiss rumours that he could take over at the London Stadium.

“It is not my dream to become their manager,” said the former Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United boss. “I’m not a man for a single club. Roma is my future.”

It’s rare, these days, that the poison-tongued Portuguese tends to last more than two years in the same job. But, while spells at Chelsea, Man United and Spurs collapsed at around this juncture, things are still going relatively smoothly at Roma. If he was quizzed about those West Ham links again, two years on, you can probably expect a similar response.

West Ham reportedly want Jose Mourinho to replace David Moyes

A madcap coach and a madcap club; this felt initially like the footballing equivalent of throwing a whole bag of mentos in a barrel of fizzed-up Pepsi. Mourinho has Roma sailing into much calmer waters these days, however,. They moved above Scudetto holders AC Milan and into the Champions League places following Sunday’s 1-0 triumph over Juventus; a real old-school, throwback Mourinho win.

According to LaRoma24, West Ham have made a ‘proposal’ for Mourinho. But, with his Giallorossi side flying high in Serie A and in contention for Europa League glory, Bent cannot imagine a serial trophy-winner walking away in favour of a relegation battle

“Jose’s not going to West Ham,” says the one-time Tottenham, Aston Villa and Sunderland striker. “He needs to go somewhere he’s got an opportunity (to win trophies).

“(If he did take over West Ham) I wouldn’t be surprised if he won them the Europa League!”

Wherever Mourinho goes, silverware tends to follow. Well, except at Tottenham, of course. One of the most decorated coaches in the history of European football picked up his 26th pot last term; an emotional Mourinho shedding tears of joy after Roma fought off Feyenoord in a tense Conference League final.

Moyes, meanwhile, is under pressure at West Ham following Saturday’s 4-0 thumping at Brighton. Bent believes the Hammers should stick with the Scot, but identifies one-time claret-and-blue favourite Michael Carrick – now pulling up trees at Middlesbrough – as a potential long-term successor.
