Chris Sutton has said on BBC Radio 5 Live (7:34pm, March 6, 2023) that Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo announced his arrival at the club with his performance against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

The former Chelsea striker was hugely impressed by the performance produced by Gakpo in Liverpool’s win against Manchester United.

Liverpool hammered the Red Devils 7-0 at home.

Gakpo started the match for the Merseyside club.

The Netherlands international forward, who joined Liverpool in the January transfer window, scored two goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Gakpo found the back of the net first in the 43rd minute and then on 50 minutes.

And BBC Sport pundit Sutton was impressed.

Chris Sutton on Cody Gakpo for Liverpool vs Manchester United

Sutton said: “I have got to say, the way he lifted the ball over De Gea, that was a special moment in terms of him saying, ‘Big moment, big game, I have arrived in a Liverpool jersey’. Massive for him.”

Flourishing at Liverpool

In our view, Cody Gakpo is going to flourish at Liverpool under manager Jurgen Klopp.

We saw against Manchester United just how good the Netherlands international forward is.

The way Gakpo took his goals was brilliant.

The 23-year-old moved to Liverpool only in January.

So, we have to give him time to get used to the Premier League and to Klopp’s system.

You cannot expect a player to join a new club in the middle of the season and hit the ground running.

Gakpo is starting to show what he is capable of now.

The forward has scored four goals in seven Premier League starts for Liverpool.
