Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has been spotted touching the ‘This is Anfield’ sign – years after admitting his love for Liverpool.
Sunday was a disaster for United as they were smashed 7-0 by rivals Liverpool.
The fallout has been harsh with many United players attracting major criticism.
There may now be scrutiny over striker Weghorst – and not because the Dutchman once again didn’t even look like scoring.
Wout Weghorst spotted touching This is Anfield sign
We’re used to seeing players touching the This is Anfield sign on the way out to the Anfield pitch.
Liverpool have posted a video which shows inside the tunnel before kick off on Sunday.
Liverpool players like Fabinho, Harvey Elliott, Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Trent Alexander-Arnold all followed this tradition.
It’s not often we see opposing players touch the sign though; it’s usually reserved for those of a Liverpool persuasion.
Yet the video showed Weghorst tapping the sign before heading out onto the pitch – the only United player to do so.
Anfield is a special place to play but United fans may not love seeing one of their own players tap the sign.

Weghorst has admitted his love for Liverpool
Weghorst is playing for United but he has previously admitted just how much he loves Liverpool.
The giant striker told De Telegraaf in 2018 that he has ‘dreamt of playing for Liverpool since childhood’.
Weghorst doubled down in 2020, telling Goal that he thinks Liverpool are ‘very special’ and he gets goosebumps from hearing You’ll Never Walk Alone.
It’s clear that this moment meant a lot to Weghorst and he wanted to tap the sign whilst he had the chance before a big game.
That’s unlikely to endear him with United fans though, who won’t ever want to see one of their players tapping the Anfield sign again.
UPDATE: Weghorst has since taken to Instagram to claim that he was just tapping the Anfield sign to try and wind up Virgil van Dijk.
Weghorst noted that his boyhood club was FC Twente and hammered home that his commitment to United cannot be questioned.
