Michael Beale brought in two new signings at Rangers in January in the form of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin, but if he can convince the Ibrox board to sanction a £3.5million move to sign Freddie Woodman – it would be his best yet.

The Gers managed to convince Belgian midfielder Raskin over a move to Ibrox despite a number of big European clubs chasing his signature. He has since made a solid start to life at Rangers – while Cantwell is also seen as a bit of a coup.

Cantwell has starred in the Premier League but since died off – and he will need time to get back to his best. Raskin is still young, but has the potential to grow into a real player. The priority for Rangers this summer, will be a goalkeeper.

Allan McGregor looks likely to retire come the end of the season, though it remains unclear. So, a new goalkeeper is ideal. The Sun claim that Rangers are battling Leeds and Leicester in the race to sign Preston North End star Woodman.

Rangers signing Freddie Woodman would be Michael Beale’s best yet

Firstly, because Woodman is already widely-experienced, at just 25. A goalkeeper that has already surpassed 150 senior games at what is still a young age, for a man between the sticks. His form this season has certainly been eye-catching.

With Preston sitting smack bang in the middle of the Championship table, Woodman has still managed to keep an impressive 14 clean sheets in 37 Preston games. More than one every three, even being described as “exceptional”.

But there are two reasons that makes Woodman an ideal signing. Firstly, for a bargain £3.5million, Rangers would be solving one of their biggest priorities in the summer. For a goalkeeper the quality of Woodman, £3.5m is a bargain.

Secondly, the fact they would be getting a 25-year-old goalkeeper with the experience he has – shows Rangers could bring in a goalkeeper that might remain no.1 for the best part of 10 years. It would be Beale’s best signing so far.
