Michael Owen has stated that Mohamed Salah will go down as ‘one of the greats’ after he scored goal number 128 in the Premier League when Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 on Wednesday night.
The Egypt star has already surpassed Owen himself in the Premier League’s goalscorer charts and now he needs one more to beat Anfield great Robbie Fowler and it could come against Manchester United on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were beaten by Manchester United during their reverse fixture and things have since gone up a few notches for the recent EFL Cup winners.
But Salah might just be hitting the right notes at such an important time of the season for the Reds, who have moved sixth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with a game in hand.
What will be pleasing for Klopp’s men is that the clean sheets are starting to stack up, that’s four on the bounce now, yes, most of them are against bottom half of the table opposition, but the last time Liverpool conceded in the league, they shipped three at Wolves.
Nonetheless, Michael Owen hailed the ‘elite’ mentality that Salah brings to the table, as he told Premier League Productions (01/03/23 at 10:45 pm).
“He’s got such a mentality, a total elite mentality,” said Owen. “He just wants to score all the time, even when he’s not at the top of his game, he is still Liverpool’s biggest threat.
“But this is a great ball from Alisson, he picks him out. A lovely one-two, Mo Salah is pointing where he wants it. Then it’s absolutely brilliant. People will think that’s lucky, it’s just bounced off your leg. You can do that. You can angle it. You can see the pace of the ball. You can shape your body in a way that you know the ball is going to bounce into the net if it comes off a certain part of your leg.
“He’s just a top-class player. About to break another record – he’s been part of a generation. In the six years he has been there, he has contributed, absolutely. He has probably been the biggest contributor.
“He has been at the forefront of this for many years now. He will go down in the record books, no question. He went past me a while ago. Now he’s about to go past Robbie Fowler. Who is next? He is going to go down as one of the greats.”
SALAH IS ALREADY A LIVERPOOL GREAT
The 30-year-old could decide to leave Liverpool tomorrow and he will go down as one of the club’s all-time greats.
It could even be argued that the £35 million star (Sky Sports) gets into Liverpool’s greatest-ever XI today, after European and Premier League title success on Merseyside.
Liverpool fans will be hoping that they can go again, but in truth, a lot of those players that starred during those special nights might now need to be moved on in the summer.
