Shay Given has said that Callum Wilson struggled to have much of an impact as Newcastle United lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final.

The ‘fantastic’ £92,000-a-week striker’s performance was criticised by Dean Saunders as he had an evening to forget at Wembley Stadium.

And now, Shay Given has also pointed out the same about Callum Wilson who found it tough for Newcastle against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final to really effect the game.

Shay Given says Callum Wilson was far from his best vs Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final

While the England international received plaudits from Gary Neville and Paul Merson as he was banging in the goals right before the World Cup, things have turned awry for him since the return of club football.

Speaking on The Overlap YouTube channel, Shay Given has said that Callum Wilson was on the periphery of things for Newcastle against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final.

“Wilson looked a bit quiet on Sunday”, he opened.

Given continued, “The question mark before the game was [Alexander] Isak; would he have started the game, would that have been a little different perhaps?”

Isak Time

As Shay Given is certainly right about Newcastle goalscorer Callum Wilson struggling to cause too many problems for Manchester United duo Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez in the Carabao Cup Final, it may be time to hand the reins to Alexander Isak up front.

The Swede had an instant impact on proceedings on Sunday as well, as he carried the ball from deep areas to give Magpies a threat away from just closer to the box.

As Eddie Howe’s side do not create chances for fun, a mobile No.9 that is significantly more involved in build-up like the former Real Sociedad hitman may be perfectly suited to them currently.
