FC Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany has reportedly rejected a proposal from Aston Villa that would have seen the La Liga official have his salary doubled.

According to Marca, the Barcelona executive has turned down an approach from the Premier League side in order to continue working with the Catalan giants, with Villa’s offer believed to be worth double what Alemany earns in his current position.

Alemany has been sporting director at Barcelona since 2021, and although the club’s financial problems have been a huge burden and talking point in recent months, the transfer official has done a solid job in his role, with the 60-year-old pulling off some impressive deals despite money issues.

And now, Villa have made an approach to appoint Alemany, though Unai Emery’s side have failed in their attempt to bring in a new transfer overlord for the upcoming summer window, with the Barcelona figure keen to continue his work with the La Liga leaders.

Indeed, whilst Barcelona are currently out of Europe, Xavi Hernandez’s side are clear favourites to win the domestic title as well as challenge for the Copa del Rey, where they face old rivals Real Madrid on Thursday night in what is being billed as a huge match for both clubs.

As for Villa, any attempt to recruit Alemany was always going to be an ambitious one, with Barcelona’s ongoing project with Xavi at the helm one of the most exciting in all of football and one that the La Liga transfer chief has had a key role in building over the last 18 months.

Villa are a Premier League side who have the vision and the financial backing to go far as a top-flight English club, however, sometimes pushing above their weight has led to some more than questionable outcomes, and their approach for Alemany was always going to be a doomed one.

As we know, the Barcelona official is playing a key role in one of the best projects in football, and whilst Villa have a goal of their own under Emery, Alemany would have been crazy to ditch the European giants and La Liga leaders for the Birmingham-based club.
