Cristian Stellini has praised Oliver Skipp after the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder scored a superb goal in the 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.
Skipp smashed home Tottenham’s opener with a powerful drive from outside the penalty area.
Harry Kane – another homegrown player – added number two for Tottenham to secure a fantastic three points.
Interim Tottenham boss Cristian Stellini, who is filling in for Antonio Conte after gallbladder surgery – has now praised Skipp.
Stellini has told BBC Sport that Skipp’s goal was a ‘brilliant moment’ and one that has been a long time coming.
Stellini notes that Tottenham have been expecting this kind of quality from Skipp for around a year now as he has been stunted by injuries and competition for places.
The Italian added that Skipp has really pushed himself in training and is a truly ‘amazing guy’ and a ‘great player’ who deserves a chance to show his quality.
“Brilliant moment [for Oliver Skipp] and one that we expected for one year because it has been one year he stayed far from the pitch. Last season with physical problems and this year for tactical decisions.
“He is ready because he has trained a lot and pushed himself. He is an amazing guy and great player. A player like Skippy has to understand that if he trains a lot he will have possibilities to show his value.”
Oliver Skipp now has golden Tottenham chance
Skipp has been thrown into the Tottenham starting lineup because of a couple of injuries.
Rodrigo Bentancur will be out until next season whilst Yves Bissouma may not play again this term.
Skipp must now form a partnership with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – one that could last until the end of the season.
Once Bentancur and Bissouma return, Skipp may drop down the pecking order again but that’s why it’s so important that Skipp takes this chance.
The 22-year-old has long been highly-regarded at Tottenham but it can be difficult for homegrown talent to make a long-lasting impact – just look at Harry Winks.
Skipp must now kick on after this goal and prove that he can be a vital player for Tottenham moving forward and potentially a goalscoring threat from range.
If he can do that, Skipp may put an end to any rumours linking Tottenham with a new midfield addition this summer.
