Speaking on BT Sport (21/2/22 10:20PM), Michael Owen has been discussing Darwin Nunez after Liverpool’s 5-2 loss to Real Madrid.

The Uruguayan striker actually had a decent game against Los Blancos on Tuesday, scoring the opening goal of the game and making a nuisance of himself throughout the match.

However, as we’ve seen from Nunez all season long, he can have his moments where he doesn’t even resemble a footballer, and Owen noted that he was shocked by just how raw Nunez is.

Nunez needs coaching

Owen discussed how raw Nunez is.

“He’s raw, I didn’t think he’d be this raw. When I watched him in the Champions League last year he was absolutely brilliant. He does things that take your breath away, but he will have to be coached to be a top player,” Owen said.

“A player I liken him to, not the same style, but when Didier Drogba came to these shores people laughed at him for a while, his touch was awful, he made a lot of mistakes, but he got used to the game, I think this lad can be similar, he’s really raw and he’ll take a lot of coaching.”

At the right place

Owen is absolutely right, Nunez does need coaching to improve his game, but luckily, he’s at the right club for that improvement to be made.

Just look at how the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane improved at Liverpool after they arrived at raw talents, Jurgen Klopp and his coaching team know how to get the best out of these unrefined forwards, and if they can polish Nunez they will have a gem.

The striker could be an absolute star for the Reds in years to come, but as Owen says, he needs to work on the finer points of his game.
