Speaking to Football Ramble, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Sporting Director, Darijo Srna, has been discussing Mykhaylo Mudryk after he made his big-money move to Chelsea in January.

The winger joined the Blues in an £89m move towards the end of the winter transfer window, but for the longest time it looked as though he was going to join Arsenal.

However, at the last minute, Chelsea came in with a bid for the Ukrainian, and, in the end, he headed to Stamford Bridge.

According to Srna, the decision to choose Chelsea over Arsenal was Mudryk’s to make, stating that the player opted to join the Blues because they paid him what he wanted.

Mudryk’s choice

Srna says that Mudryk made the decision to snub Arsenal.

“Regarding the transfer proposal, the price was €100m (£89m), €70m plus €30m. Arsenal were in love with Mudryk, but Chelsea were more concrete and were more ready to buy him. With respect to Arsenal, in the end it was the decision of Mudryk because Chelsea paid him what he wants and he said he wants to go to Chelsea, it’s simple,” Srna said.

“Don’t worry about Mudryk, you will enjoy watching him. This is 35% of Mudryk, he is not playing well the coach at Chelsea now is not in a good mood and they’re not playing well, but they need time. Mudryk will be ok, don’t worry.”

Can’t blame him

While it may have been frustrating for Arsenal to be rejected by Mudryk in this manner, it’s hard to blame the player for making this type of call.

It’s not every day that you’re offered a big-money eight-year contract. These sorts of terms are just too good to turn down.

His financial future is sorted for years to come, and even if he doesn’t live up to expectations, he’s got a guaranteed income basically for the rest of his career.

Chelsea’s offer was too good to reject.
