Alan Shearer has raved about Arsenal attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard on Match of the Day on BBC One for his performance against Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Newcastle United legend and BBC Sport pundit was impressed by what he saw from Odegaard after he missed a very good chance to score for Arsenal against Villa.

The Gunners got the better of Villa away from home in the Premier League on Saturday.

However, Arsenal needed two late goals to pick up all three points from the encounter.

The £30 million (Sky Sports) Odegaard provided an assist in the match.

Shearer said about Odegaard: “It should be in the back of the net. But that didn’t stop him, that miss.

“That didn’t stop him, by the way, because I think he actually got better after that, which tells you his mentality. He wasn’t frightened to go and get on the ball still.”

Encouraging

Martin Odegaard is the Arsenal captain, and although the 24-year-old was not at his best against Aston Villa, the Norway international playmaker gave his best and was fully committed to the cause.

As Shearer noted, the former Real Madrid player did not shy away from his responsibilities and was always there to help out his teammates.

Odegaard does not appear to be the most vocal of players.

You do not often see him giving instructions, talking loudly or shouting on the pitch.

Odegaard is the quiet type who lets his football do the talking and leads by example.
