Liverpool have reportedly sent a scout to watch Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio, a talent who Newcastle United were very interested in signing the 21-year-old.

According to Correio da Manha, the Reds had a representative present for Sporting’s league clash against Portuguese giants FC Porto, with the report stating that Liverpool are in a strong position to sign Inacio in the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for a young centre-back, with the report stating that Inacio could be the cheapest of the options Liverpool are scouting ahead of the window, with Josko Gvardiol, Jarrad Branthwaite, and Antonio Silva also on the Reds’ radar.

With a release clause of €45m (£38m), Inacio would be quite a shrewd signing for Liverpool if they were to move in for the Sporting defender. However, Newcastle could prove to be a threat for the Anfield side given their previous interest in the Portuguese youngster.

A Bola reported in April of last year that the Toon were also heavily scouting the centre-back. And although Newcastle ended up signing Sven Botman and have since been one of the best defensive clubs in Europe this season, Inacio could still be on the Magpies’ radar.

Indeed, a centre-back is expected to be on Newcastle’s shopping list, and although Liverpool are now interested in signing Inacio, the Reds have to be wary of the threat their Premier League rivals pose in the summer, especially given how attractive a move to St. James Park could now be.

Liverpool’s business in the transfer market has been mixed in terms of results, yet when it comes to efficiency, the Reds are one of the best in the game, and the Anfield side could look to work their magic again this summer when it comes to signing Inacio.

With the entire squad set for an overhaul, signing Inacio in a rapid deal will be the perfect way to kick off the summer of spending, with the defender a perfect long-term defensive partner for Ibrahima Konate as well as cover for the likes of Virgil van Dijk.
