Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie has indicated that his agent held ‘talks’ with Tottenham Hotspur when quizzed about a potential switch to the Premier League outfit, speaking to Studio Football on TikTok.

Clement Lenglet was, perhaps, one of the few Spurs players who fulfilled his end of the bargain during Tuesday’s highly-disappointing 1-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg defeat at AC Milan.

Unlike Cristian Romero on the opposite side, Lenglet was strong. Aggressive. He helped keep the Rossoneri at bay for the most part.

But, with the Barcelona loanee having already admitted that there is no option to buy clause in his contract, Tottenham’s continued interest in a number of left-footed centre-halves feels like an acceptance of Lenglet’s summer departure.

Ecuador international Hincapie is right at the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, though Bayer Leverkusen are likely to demand a club-record fee in the region of £80 million (The Sun). A problem that rumoured takeover could solve perhaps…

Hincapie has spoken excitedly about Tottenham’s interest in the recent past. And, when quizzed again about a switch to North London, the one-time Celtic target indicated that negotiations have already taken place.

“My agent says that there were talks (but) I never got involved in the subject,” Hincapie says.

“I now know that are clubs interested in me. I must show even more. So that, one day, (a big move) becomes a reality.”

At 21, Hincapie is far from the finished article. The youngster makes his fair share of mistakes, having given away a number of penalties during his time at Bayer Leverkusen. Tottenham would be paying for potential, however, and Hincapie certainly has more than most.

Hincapie extended his contract until 2027 earlier this week. But this does not mean he will be staying at the Bay Arena for a further four years. More like Leverkusen attempting to protect his value.

“Piero’s signing eighteen months ago was an investment in the future. Back then, he was a talented central defender with really big potential,” says managing director Simon Rolfes (BuliNews).

“He became a key performer for Die Werkself a long time ago. He has shown his international quality in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League. And, recently, at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.”
