FC Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has suggested that the Catalan club should look to sign Lionel Messi as well as Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Speaking to Jijantes FC, the defender was asked about which two players he would like to sign for Barcelona if given the power to do so, with Araujo replying with club legend Messi as well as Uruguayan teammate Bentancur, who joined Tottenham last year in a £22m deal.

Araujo said when asked on who he would sign if he had the power: “I would want [Rodrigo] Bentancur and Messi. Obviously [Messi] is a player that everyone wants in the team, [his return] would be amazing and something special, I don’t know how things will turn out but of course we would love it.”

Whilst Bentancur might be out until the end of the season with an ACL injury, it makes sense why Araujo would want his international teammate at the Camp Nou alongside Messi, with Barcelona expected to move for a central midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, whilst Bentancur might not be up to scratch to play for a club as big as Barcelona just yet, it is high praise that Araujo would choose to sign the Tottenham midfielder for the La Liga giants if given the chance, especially with Messi being the defender’s first option.

Barcelona signing a South American from the Premier League is hardly a surprising transfer, yet even with Bentancur one of Tottenham’s more consistent players, it feels like a work of fiction that the midfielder would one day end up playing alongside Araujo in Catalonia.

After all, Bentancur is currently out for potentially nine months with an ACL injury, and with Barcelona expected to spend big in the summer yet again, it is unlikely that Araujo’s international teammate will ever get the chance to play for the La Liga side in the coming years.
