Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Liverpool defenders Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are not good enough when Virgil van Dijk is not in the team.
Van Dijk is injured at the moment, and former Arsenal star Merson does not think that fellow centre-backs Gomez and Matip are good enough to hold their own without the Netherlands international.
Liverpool are struggling at the moment and are in real danger of missing out on a top-four finish in the Premier League table this season.
Paul Merson on Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Joel Matip
Merson wrote: “Without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are simply not good enough and given Liverpool are constantly being overrun in midfield – I would like to see them mix things up.”

Understandable
We can understand why Liverpool are struggling without Virgil van Dijk.
Now, the former Celtic star was not exactly in great form for Liverpool before his injury, but he is still one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.
Van Dijk is the main guy in the back-line for Liverpool.
Now, Gomez and Matip are good players.
After all, you would not be play for Liverpool if you were not.
However, neither Gomez nor Matip is at the level of Van Dijk.
So, we can understand why the Liverpool defence is not as good or strong when Van Dijk is not there.
