Ian Wright has stated that in previous times ‘you couldn’t get to people like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’ but now you can ‘get by’ the Liverpool duo.

The Highbury legend added that Liverpool’s ‘full core press’ and that ability to play with ‘pure energy’ has now gone.

When that first ball was kicked at the start of the season away at Fulham. The signs were pretty clear that there were issues on Merseyside.

At the time, you could argue it was a blip, perhaps the team needed a kick up the backside, well, that’s no longer the case now.

Over the weekend, it was another nightmare game for the team, this time suffering a 3-0 defeat to Wolves, with Gomez starting at the heart of defence alongside Joel Matip.

Van Dijk is still out injured, but when he was starting these issues were still there, nonetheless, Ian Wright shared his thoughts, as he told Premier League Productions (06/02/23 at 2:45 pm).

“The way that they played when they dominated,” said Wright. “It was like a full core press with pure energy.

“From front to midfield. This is why you couldn’t get to people like Virgil van Dijk and Gomez. You are looking at Virgil van Dijk and Gomez, in certain situations and think, ‘wow, I didn’t know you could get by him like that’.

“They making mistakes. This is because of the way they defended from the front winning the ball and it was relentless.”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE HOPE?

Liverpool are out of both domestic competitions and they just can’t seem to find that much-needed boost of life in the Premier League.

Therefore, is there hope in the Champions League? It’s the repeat of the 2022 final because it’s none other than Real Madrid over two legs.

But perhaps knockout-style football will help this all-over-the-shop Liverpool side.

And, if they were to progress, then it might just help them find some much-needed lease of life so they can start to move forward again.
