Tim Sherwood says he has been ‘unfair’ on Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte and how he felt that the Italian had ‘lost his spark’ on the touchline.

The former Premier League manager thinks Conte’s recent health issues, where he has surgery to remove his gallbladder, have played a part in his recent mellow ways on the touchline, as he told Premier League Productions (05/02/23 at 6:55 pm).

On Sunday, Conte was resting at home whilst his assistant Cristian Stellini took charge for their 1-0 win over Premier League champions Manchester City, in which Harry Kane became a record-breaker.

The England captain scored number 267 for Spurs, surpassing the great Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s highest-ever goal-getter.

It won’t be long before he is also top of that pile for England, with just one more goal needed to surpass Wayne Rooney, but he needs another 61 to beat that Alan Shearer record.

Nonetheless, when Sherwood shared his thoughts on Conte, he changed his mind about how he has been feeling about the £288k-a-week figure previously.

“I have been unfair to Conte in the past month or so because I always felt that he lost a spark,” said Sherwood. “Obviously, the man hasn’t been well. We have to take that into consideration.

“Hopefully, he comes back full of beans and starts being nasty, like he was before. You see him, jumping around and barking at the opposition manager and officials. I want to see that Antonio back.

“Now that he is back to some health, then hopefully, they can go on. The FA Cup is wide open for them, at the moment. They are in a really healthy position in the Premier League. When you have Harry Kane in your team, then anything can happen.”

WILL CONTE STAY BEYOND THE SUMMER?

It remains to be seen when Conte will be back in the dugout ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Leicester City at the weekend.

Even if he’s not back, it probably won’t be long before he is jumping up and down on the touchline again.

But his contract is running down and the big question still remains – will he sign on the dotted line?

In truth, if Spurs don’t secure Champions League football, then he’s probably out of the door, but if they can win the FA Cup, then it might just see Conte staying on beyond the summer.
