Harry Kane grabbed the only goal, firing past Ederson as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg stole possession on the edge of City’s box.
Even a Cristian Romero red card couldn’t haul City back into the game with Tottenham seeing out a vital 1-0 win.

Kane is of course taking most of the plaudits having become Tottenham’s all-time record goalscorer on Sunday.
Yet Kane wasn’t alone in shining against City, with other players stepping up their performance levels to beat the Premier League champions.
Fellow attacker Son Heung-min certainly rose to the occasion after a difficult campaign to date.
The South Korean finished last season as the joint-top scorer in the Premier League, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah after 23 goals.
This season has ben much trickier for Son, bagging just four goals and three assists in 20 Premier League games.
It looks like Son will struggle to break 10 goals this season, never mind 20.
There have been theories as to why – age, a heavy workload over the years taking its toll, the addition of a right-footed left wing back in Ivan Perisic, the face injury he suffered in November.
Son showed signs of getting back to his best with two outstanding goals against Preston North End in the FA Cup, and he looked sharp against City too.
The stats still don’t look great – one key pass, one shot on target and 12 accurate passes against City – but Son looked a little more confident.
Pundit Gary Neville has agreed with that, suggesting on the Gary Neville Podcast that Son looked like his spark returned against City.
Neville felt that was Son’s best performance for a while and whilst a dip in form is only natural, he could be getting back to his best.
“It’s the best I’ve seen Son today,” said Neville. “I thought that he just looked like he’d lost a little bit of something. He’s played a lot of football an he’s been at a high level for so long, you can have a dip, but I thought that today, he’d got a bit of his spark back,” he added.
