Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce has named Anthony Gordon to Newcastle as the best signing of the January transfer window, but he did have some reservations about the way the move came about.
Gordon has been in decent form this season, netting three goals for Everton. His pace, dribbling ability and workrate make him the type of player Eddie Howe loves.
The £45 million transfer fee that Newcastle paid for Gordon is a significant amount of money, but it could prove to be a bargain in the long run. With his talent and potential, it’s possible that Gordon could go on to become one of the best players in the world. This could make the transfer fee look like a relative pittance in a few years’ time.
Allardyce discusses Gordon
The ex-Bolton boss spoke about Gordon being the best signing of the window.
“I don’t know how strong that bid was from Chelsea before the window shut in the summer, which was reputed to be £60 or £70million but to let a young man go, forced his own way out to be fair, which I don’t like. An Everton boy, an Everton supporter,” Allardyce said.
“But you have to get the best you can. I think £45million is short of the real valuation of what we have seen in some of the players who have been transferred this window.
“But great for Newcastle. I’d say it was a bit of a bargain for them.”
Decent signing
Despite his misgivings about the way that Gordon left Everton, Allardyce believes that the move to Newcastle is a good one for the player. The former Newcastle manager knows all too well the pressure that comes with playing for a big club like Newcastle, but he believes that Gordon has the talent and the mental toughness to thrive in this environment.
Unfortunately, Gordon did show some attitude problems towards the end of his time at Everton, and he’ll have to leave that in the past if he’s going to make it at St James’ Park.

While the transfer fee is substantial, the former manager thinks that it could turn out to be a great piece of business for Newcastle in the long run.
