Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has shared what he knows about Arsenal and their late January interest in Martin Zubimendi.
The Spanish midfielder was linked to Arsenal towards the end of the transfer window, and according to Romano, the Gunners were keen on the player.
However, Arsenal decided against pursuing a deal as they received indications that Zubimendi wanted to stay at Sociedad until the end of the season.
Romano noted that Zubimendi didn’t actually reject Arsenal, the Gunners just didn’t follow up their interest very strongly.

Arsenal looked at Zubimendi
Romano shared what he knows about this situation.
“I want to start with Arsenal, they wanted a midfielder to help Arteta with the squad depth there,” Romano said.
“In the final days of the window they considered different options in the midfield. One of the players they were considering was Martin Zubimendi, a midfielder playing for Real Sociedad. A very good midfielder, already on the list of Barcelona. Arsenal considered a move for Zubimendi, he has a release clause, but on the player’s side, he was happy to stay at Sociedad until the end of the season.
“Arsenal didn’t even proceed with talks with Sociedad because they saw the player wanted to stay in Spain. He wasn’t rejecting Arsenal or any other club, he just wanted to stay at Sociedad.”
One for summer?
By the sounds of things, this could be one to watch heading into the summer transfer window.
Indeed, as Romano says, Arsenal didn’t pursue Zubimendi because he wanted to see out this season at Sociedad, but that could all change come the end of the season.
Arsenal still need a midfielder after adding the 31-year-old Jorginho to their squad as a short-term option, so perhaps Zubimendi is a player they’ll look at in the summer.
He’s certainly a name to keep in mind.
