Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Tottenham’s January transfer window, and he’s shared that Spurs almost signed Gerard Deulofeu in the winter window.
According to Romano, a deal was very nearly done for Deulofeu in January, but sadly, an injury to the player hampered his chances of moving back to the Premier League with Spurs.
Apparently, Tottenham’s board are huge fans of Deulofeu, which is no surprise considering how well he has been doing in Serie A this season.

Spurs almost signed Deulofeu
Romano shared what he knows about this deal.
“This is a very surprising one. We know that Tottenham wanted a new offensive player. They were linked with Nicolo Zaniolo, then they got Danjuma on loan. I can reveal that Tottenham were considering a move for Gerard Deulofeu. He is doing incredible in Serie A. He has played for Everton, Watford and Barcelona in the past,” Romano said.
“An important player who was very appreciated by the board. The deal was almost done for Deulofeu to join Tottenham, but he had a serious injury and was not available anymore on the market before joining Tottenham.”
Danjuma a better option
Spurs didn’t end up signing Deulofeu and ended up signing Arnaut Danjuma instead, and we can’t help but feel that Spurs got the better end of the deal here.
Yes, Deulofeu has been brilliant in Italy this season, but he’s often flattered to deceive in the Premier League, proving to be inconsistent with Everton and Watford over the years.
Danjuma had a similar experience with Bournemouth, but he seems to have grown so much at Villarreal, and is ready for another crack at the English top-flight.
Deulofeu may well be one to keep an eye on once he’s recovered from his injury as he clearly has admirers at Spurs.
