Amadou Onana was being linked with an exit from Everton in the January window but has now taken to Instagram to tell fans that he “ain’t leaving the ship” – amid reports that Arsenal and Chelsea were keen to sign the Belgian star.

Onana, 21, joined Everton from Lille in the summer for a fee in the region of £33million. Since then, he has clocked up 20 outings for the Toffees. Indeed, the Belgium World Cup star has arguably been his side’s best player this season.

A shining light in a poor side. If Everton have any chance of staying up this season with Sean Dyche in the dugout, then Onana will be central to that. Little surprise, with Everton in 19th, he was linked with an exit in the January window.

Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri reported in January that Arsenal were interested. Then, in a later report, Chelsea are said to have made contact. 90Min report that Everton would have sold him for £50million. But he has remained.

But the 6ft 4in midfielder has now taken to Instagram after the window slammed shut. He will have delighted Everton fans by pledging his allegiance with the club – perhaps, unlike Anthony Gordon. He said that he “ain’t leaving”.

Of course, he was never going to be leaving when the January window slammed shut. But there might have been a fear among the Everton fans that he would have been disillusioned to have stayed at Goodison Park. The absolute opposite.

Everton fans know that if anyone’s attitude has been spot on this season, then it is Onana. Constantly working hard to help his side and producing some decent performances. He is central to anything good Everton may do this season.

Dyche has now come in and will surely keep Onana in the side as they begin a new era under the ex-Burnley manager on Saturday – hosting Premier League leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park. A club that were linked with signing Onana.
