Liverpool could reportedly look into signing free agents following the closure of the January transfer window, with the Reds failing to make any new additions beyond Cody Gakpo.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp’s side could test the waters in the free agent market to solve their midfield crisis, with the Reds short of options in the position and in need of a boost of morale in the squad following their exit from the FA Cup.

With Ibrahima Konate also the latest player to suffer an injury, the number of players in Liverpool’s treatment room continues to grow, with Luis Diaz, Virgil van Dijk and Arthur Melo all out for the long haul, hence why the Reds could now look into signing free agents.

As per the report, there are some big-name players out there looking to sign for a new club, namely former Real Madrid superstar Isco and Morocco international Zakaria Labyad, though it is unlikely that Liverpool will target these two names specifically.

Indeed, with Liverpool’s season falling apart with seemingly every passing game, dipping into the free agent market might not be the worst idea for Klopp and his transfer team, especially with the Reds failing to bring anyone in on deadline day despite calls from fans.

With Liverpool having one of the best scouting departments in Europe, a free agent signing could soon be flagged up as a potential squad player for the Reds, and with depth needed to combat this latest injury crisis, someone is arguably better than nobody this February.

It would be an understatement to say that Liverpool’s season has been a trainwreck in the making. Sat midtable with top-four hopes all-but quashed with a UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid coming later this month, the Reds could have salvaged something through smart spending in the January window.

However, it was not to be, and whilst free agents might not be a profitable way to add quality to a squad, Liverpool could turn to the market to bolster their numbers in the team and to get their campaign back on track, with midfield and defensive options needed.
