Football London’s Alasdair Gold says Tottenham man Djed Spence has rejected the chance to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid – as well as Serie A side Sassuolo – to team up with French side Rennes and Joe Rodon on loan.

Spence, 22, has only managed six games for Tottenham this season since joining the club from Middlesbrough. His move came after starring for Nottingham Forest on loan, helping Steve Cooper’s side gain promotion to the top tier.

With Spurs closing in on Pedro Porro, it would leave Spurs with four options at right wing-back. Matt Doherty, and Emerson Royal are also options. It has forced Spence to leave. Di Marzio reported he is on his way to Rennes.

The England U21 star will link up with Rodon at the French club, who are in the Europa League knockout stages this season. Gold has delivered a further update, claiming that Spence actually turned down the chance to join Atleti.

Spurs also have a player on loan at Atletico Madrid, in the form of Sergio Reguilon – but he is struggling, with injury hampering his progress. Spence is ready to go and fit. But he has made the decision to turn down Atletico Madrid.

The reasoning is that Spence was unsure if he would be getting regular game time. He wants to join a side that can offer him regular football and Spence is confident he will get that at Rennes. Certainly, more than he has at Spurs.

It looks clear then that Spence will join Rennes before the end of the day on a dry loan, without an option. Rodon has done well at Rennes on the whole, and Spurs will be keeping a close eye on the Ligue 1 side – now, for both players.
