According to Keith Downie on Sky Sports News (31/1/23 8:45AM), Conor Gallagher is more likely to sign for Newcastle than Sander Berge on deadline day.

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on the final day of the transfer window.

The Magpies have been looking for a midfielder to replace Jonjo Shelvey, who is set to join Nottingham Forest.

Downie said that there is a “big caveat” to the move, as Chelsea have been unwilling to do business with Newcastle in recent windows due to the fact that they see the Magpies as a direct rival. However, if Chelsea manage to sign Enzo Fernandez, they may need to move Gallagher on, which could open the door for Newcastle.

Gallagher more likely than Berge.

Downie gave this response when asked about Gallagher and Berge.

“Yeah, that one of the two we’re talking about is more likely to happen. However, it comes with a caveat, a big caveat. Chelsea have been unwilling to do business with Newcastle this window, in the summer window last year as well, due to the fact they now see Newcastle as a direct rival. It’s one to watch today because if Chelsea land Enzo Fernandez they may need to move Gallagher on,” Downie said.

Great addition

Gallagher has been in impressive form over the past 12 months, playing for Chelsea, Crystal Palace and England.

He has been linked to Liverpool and Everton as well, but Newcastle seem to be the most likely destination at the moment as the two Merseyside clubs battle with numerous problems on and off the pitch.

Gallagher could be just what Newcastle need to boost their chances of achieving a top four finish. He fits into their policy of signing young players with a point to prove, and he’d complement Bruno Guimaraes in that midfield very well.

While it remains to be seen if the move will go through, the potential acquisition of Gallagher could be a key move for Newcastle as they look to solidify their place in Champions League spots.

Whether or not Chelsea decide to do business with Newcastle remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see where Gallagher ends up on deadline day.
