Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson, has spoken about the interest that Everton has shown in Conor Gallagher. The Toffees have reportedly bid £45m for the midfielder, who is currently also a target for Newcastle United.

Merson believes that if Everton were safe in their league position, Gallagher would have already joined the club. He sees the 22-year-old as the perfect player for Everton and thinks that he could be a key player in helping them secure their top-flight status.

However, with the club currently in a precarious position and hovering just above the relegation zone, Merson acknowledges that Gallagher’s decision to join would be a difficult one. He understands that if Everton were to be relegated, Gallagher would be facing a huge drop in the level of football he’s playing and would be making a step down from one of the biggest clubs in Europe to the Championship.

Merson thinks Gallagher is the one

Merson gave his verdict on this move on Sky Sports News (12:28PM).

“I think if Everton were midtable he’d fly there. It’s a hard one at the moment because if they get relegated he’d be going from one of the biggest clubs in Europe at Chelsea to the Championship,” Merson said.

“If Everton were safe he might have gone. He ticks every box for Everton. If I was Everton I’d be paying up to £10m fee to get him on loan until the end of the season, I think he’s worth it. If Conor Gallagher was to go to Everton he’d keep them up, I think that is exactly what they’re crying out for.”

Expensive

Despite the potential risks, Merson believes that Gallagher would be worth the investment and would make a big impact for Everton.

He suggests that it would even be worthwhile to pay £10m to bring the Chelsea loanee to Goodison Park until the end of the season, which sounds ridiculous considering they wouldn’t be making a permanent signing.

However, Premier League survival is worth so much more than £10m, so Merson may not be wrong here. After all, he does say that Gallagher would help Everton stay up.

Merson sees Gallagher as the missing piece in the puzzle for Everton and feels that the midfielder could be the key to securing their Premier League status.

Sadly, it looks like this move isn’t on the cards, but anything can happen on deadline day.
