Leeds United are now giving a fresh approach from Sunderland for the loan transfer of Joe Gelhardt serious consideration. He is also a target of a handful of rival Championship clubs.

That is according to The Northern Echo, which reports Sunderland have renewed their bid to hire Gelhardt from Leeds. The 20-year-old was due to return to his former academy side Wigan Athletic this January. But the Latics are still yet to agree on the terms of his transfer.

Wigan remain in the hunt for the striker’s services but the delay for Gelhardt’s transfer has refreshed Sunderland’s hopes. Leeds are committed to letting the Liverpool-born ace leave Elland Road on loan this month. He has struggled for games under Jesse Marsch this term.

Leeds were exploring Wigan’s advances as the Latics had put forward a significant financial package for Gelhardt’s loan. The DW Stadium side are desperate for another goal threat as Kolo Toure’s squad sit bottom of the Championship table. They have 27 goals in 28 games.

Blackburn Rovers also appreciate what the England U21 prospect would provide at Ewood Park. But Leeds are now giving a fresh approach from Sunderland serious consideration as director of football Victor Orta strives to seal Gelhardt a loan transfer before the deadline.

Leeds appreciate Sunderland’s fresh pursuit of Joe Gelhardt’s loan transfer

Leeds appreciate Sunderland’s pursuit of Gelhardt’s loan transfer after debating Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray’s reputation for developing youngsters. The Stadium of Light club can also offer the striker a chance to fight for promotion. They sit ninth in the table at present.

Sunderland are just one point outside of the play-off positions with third to 10th place just three points apart. But Everton have recalled Ellis Simms from the 22-year-old’s loan spell on Wearside. The Toffees took the striker back after he scored seven goals in 17 matches.

Marsch has fielded Gelhardt – who Jamie Redknapp has called ‘really exciting’ – during 15 Premier League games this season. But the 20-year-old has only played for 201 minutes in the top-flight having only started just one game. He is also yet to score but has two assists.
