Everton want Kamaldeen Sulemana and could firm up their interest in the Rennes winger after missing out on Arnaut Danjuma to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Toffees appeared to have a deal for Danjuma done and dusted over the weekend.
The Villarreal winger had completed a medical with Everton with a loan deal agreed between the two clubs.
Everton then went and sacked Frank Lampard on Monday night, which seemed to play a part in Sulemana getting cold feet on the move.
Tottenham sensed their opportunity and swooped in to hijack the deal, taking Danjuma on loan with an option to buy.
Tottenham have now confirmed the signing of Danjuma, leaving Everton to go back to the drawing board in search of attacking reinforcements.

Kamaldeen Sulemana could become Everton’s alternative to Arnaut Danjuma
Reports from Foot Mercato on Tuesday suggested that Everton were looking to hijack Bamba Dieng’s potential move from Marseille to Lorient.
Everton may go for another Ligue 1 attacker though with Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana strongly linked again.
L’Equipe report that Southampton have made a bid of around €17million (£15million) for Sulemana but Rennes have rejected that offer.
It’s added that Everton would be interested in signing Sulemana if they miss out on Danjuma – which has now happened.
The Daily Mail reported last week that Everton have asked about signing Sulemana, possibly on loan with a view to a permanent move.
Rennes wanted £40million when Newcastle targeted Sulemana over the summer, but a tricky season means their asking price may have dipped.
The 20-year-old has started just two league games for Rennes this season and Everton are seemingly looking to take full advantage.
Sulemana isn’t quite as polished as Danjuma but does possess blistering pace – something Everton really need to add to their side this month.
Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ at former club Norsdjaelland, Sulemana needs to be playing again with Everton potentially willing to give him the first-team football he needs.
