Rangers want Nicolas Raskin and there are claims in Belgium that he has already passed a medical in London ahead of a move to Ibrox.

Belgian newspaper Le Soir report that Raskin travelled to London on Thursday and went through the medical tests on Friday.

It’s suggested that Rangers haven’t yet sorted out an agreement with Standard over a possible deal.

Yet the plan would be for Rangers to try and negotiate a low fee for Raskin over the coming week, using his contract situation as leverage.

Raskin is out of contract in the summer and can sign a pre-contract agreement – which may well be why he can go and sort out medical tests elsewhere.

Rangers are seemingly closing in on Raskin and this may be a pre-contract deal at first, which the Gers can use to sort out a cheap immediate transfer.

Rangers target Nicolas Raskin hailed ahead of potential Ibrox move

Raskin, 21, has turned out 96 times for Standard, notching five goals and 13 assists in those appearances.

A diminutive midfielder who can control the game from deep and bring real energy to the engine room, Raskin can help revitalise the Rangers midfield.

One man who knows Raskin well is Belgium Under-21 boss Jacky Mathijssen; Raskin has bagged six caps for the Belgium Under-21’s.

Mathijssen has told the Daily Record that he thinks Rangers fans will be ecstatic if Raskin does make the move to Ibrox this month.

Mathijssen noted that Raskin is ‘always all-in’ and has ‘excellent technique’, even suggesting that his potential is ‘high’.

The Belgium Under-21 boss added that his assistant Thomas Buffel – a former Rangers player himself – and understands the pressure of playing in Glasgow.

That could really help Raskin and Mathijssen thinks the midfielder will be in touch as soon as the move is official – suggesting he himself believes the deal is close.

“The Rangers fans will be delighted if he goes to Glasgow,” said Mathijssen. He’s a player who is always all-in. He’s got a good heart, is always ready to work but has excellent technique too and is very flexible tactically. He can play No.8, he can play in the pockets. That’s how he plays for me in the Under-21s.”

“He’s very young but his potential is high. My assistant Thomas played in Glasgow with Rangers and he knows very well the pressures there so I’m sure he’ll be in touch as soon as this is made official to help him,” he added.
