Audiences of a certain age will likely look back on Brendan Fraser’s heyday with heavy nostalgia. The 54-year-old American-Canadian actor was a favorite amongst many in the 1990s and early 2000s, becoming best known for the central role of Rick O’Connell in The Mummy trilogy, which began in 1999 and concluded with Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor in 2008.
He was celebrated as a leading man in movies like George Of The Jungle and Bedazzled too. However, audiences will notice that he wasn’t as prevalent on screens after the third Mummy installment.
On the other hand, he has still been acting since and earned supporting roles in titles like Pawn Shop Chronicles (he played Ricky, an Elvis impersonator).
His absence in the mainstream has been felt by fans, but The Whale has already begun to change that. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), the film casts Brendan in the central role of Charlie, a reclusive and severely obese teacher who is attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
He has even landed an Academy Award nomination but is The Whale nod Brendan Fraser’s first Oscar nomination?
Is Brendan Fraser’s first Oscar nomination for The Whale?
Yes, The Whale marks Brendan Fraser’s first-ever Oscar nomination and he’s nominated in the Best Actor category.
The Whale has been nominated in three categories in total, with the second being in the Best Supporting Actress category for Hong Chau (who plays Liz) and the third being Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
The nominations were announced on Tuesday, January 24th 2023, and Brendan will be competing against the likes of Austin Butler (Elvis), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin), and Bill Nighy (Living).
Looking ahead, the 95th Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, March 12th 2023 and audiences will be able to tune in live from home as Jimmy Kimmel hosts this year’s prestigious event.
