Aston Villa are now prepared to spend a club-record fee to sign Liverpool target Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao.

What’s the story?

Well, the Villans are certainly keen to back Unai Emery in the transfer market, as those at Villa Park are willing to sanction a £45m deal for the Spain international – according to Dominic King of the Daily Mail.

It comes after Calciomercato in Italy claimed that Liverpool are also interested in Williams.

Sadly for Aston Villa, it seems as if the 20-year-old will take some convincing over a move to the Midlands.

King adds that Williams doesn’t want to leave Athletic Bilbao as things stand, despite the fact Aston Villa are ready to trigger his £45m release clause.

Emery is considering a bid for Luiz Henrique of Real Betis as an alternative if the Spaniard cannot be convinced.

Interest in Williams comes after he scored five goals – while also providing four assists – in 22 appearances so far this season, as well as shining for Spain at the World Cup.

Aston Villa should move on from Liverpool target

In our view, Aston Villa shouldn’t waste any more time on a deal for Williams with just a week remaining in the transfer window.

A deal for Henrique – who seems to be an equally exciting talent – should now be pursued.

The Brazil Under-20 is also making a real impact in La Liga as well as the Europa League, registering eight goal involvements across all competitions for Real Betis so far this season.

Interestingly, Henrique has been used centrally at times this term whereas Williams has only played out wide, so the South American’s versatility could come in handy for Emery.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as the Villans are clearly keen to sign a new forward before deadline day.
