Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are changing their stance over selling the club, according to journalist Miguel Delaney’s Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent (1:31pm, January 20, 2023).

The journalist has reported that FSG are now as much open to “selling a minority stake” as they are to a full sale of Liverpool.

FSG are changing their stance over a outright sale of Liverpool, as they have realised that the market may not be as “open” as it seemed when Chelsea got sold in the summer.

Manchester United are also on the market for sale.

FSG stance on Liverpool sale

Delaney wrote: “Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group are now looking at selling a minority stake as much as an outright sale, and the general belief among football industry insiders is that is down to a shift in the market.

“While the price Chelsea went for seemed to suggest it was open season, there is now a bit of trepidation.

“Liverpool have not had that much interest. While the Glazers want to sell United for around €6bn, meanwhile, Jim Ratcliffe’s advisors value it at €4bn.”

Worrying?

In our view, this particular line in the report is worrying – “Liverpool have not had that much interest”.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have a global fanbase.

They are a global brand who have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent years under manager Jurgen Klopp.

And they are still competitive.

So, we find it strange and worrying that Liverpool have not had much interest.

What could the reason be?

Is it because FSG are asking for too much money?

Or is it because potential buyers do not want to take a risk because of the heavy investment needed in the playing squad to compete with Manchester City season after season?
