Fabrizio Romano says Rangers have had a £1.5m bid rejected for Morgan Whittaker – which could well be the Ibrox club’s second offer for the young English attacker, who has impressed out on loan during the first half of the season.

Whittaker, 22, has been strongly linked with Rangers. The England Under-20 international is back at Swansea, after a stunning first half to the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Plymouth. Swansea have recalled him due to his incredible form.

Indeed, clocking up 31 appearances in the first half of the season for the League One club, he had a hand in 16 goals. Scoring nine times, he laid on seven assists. The Sun reported earlier this month that Rangers had a £900k bid rejected.

The second-tier English side are said to want as much as £2m for Whittaker. Now, Romano has reported that Rangers have tried to compromise with Swansea, upping their offer to £1.5m. But Swansea are unwilling to budge on Whittaker.

It is clear that Rangers are not going to back out of this move without a fight. Whittaker is a proper talent. One with huge potential – shown on loan at Plymouth. He would not start to begin with at Ibrox, but could be in the future.

Ryan Kent scored in a 3-2 away win over Kilmarnock on Wednesday night. But the ex-Liverpool man is out of contract in the summer and if he goes, that opens up a real chance for Whittaker to break in. A Rangers move would be huge.

It will be interesting to see if Rangers now return with a third bid, and increase their offer to try and tempt Swansea into letting him go. It might be that a fee of around £1.8million and future clauses could sign “brilliant” Whittaker.
