Jenson Brooksby’s front tooth caused a stir during his Australian Open match vs Casper Ruud. Fans couldn’t worked out what had happened and wondered if he’d chipped it.

The upsets keep happening at the 2023 Australian Open, with Jenson Brooksby defeating second seed Casper Ruud in the second round earlier today (19 January).

The hard-hitting American overcame last year’s French and US Open runner-up, 6-3 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2. The 22-year-old is the world number 39, and made the third round at Wimbledon last year and the fourth round at the 2021 US Open.

It is his first time playing Down Under and will now face compatriot Tommy Paul in the next round.

It was undoubtedly a career win for the youngster. However, fans couldn’t help but notice something wrong with Jenson Brooksby’s front tooth during the encounter with Ruud.

“Do we know what’s going on with Brooksby’s teeth?” once person asked during the match. “Important question: What’s up with Brooksby’s teeth?” another questioned.

Fans couldn’t work out what had happened and wondered if the American had chipped his tooth during the match. People took to social media to ask what was going on, remarking that it was distracting them from the action:

However, as fans later pointed out, the issue seemed to resolve itself after a while, and Brooksby hadn’t actually chipped his tooth at all.

Fans theorised that he actually had a bit of food – potentially from a protein bar after the change of ends – which had stuck on his teeth:

After the match, Brooksby heaped praise on Ruud and previewed his match against Tommy Paul

“First and foremost, Casper is a warrior,” he said. “I knew it would be great battle out there. I was pretty confident with my level and just wanted to have fun competing out there.

“I was just really proud of my mental resolve there, after the third-set battle didn’t go my way, to just turn it around.”

“That’s going to be another battle for sure,” Brooksby said of facing Paul in the third round. “A lot of Americans are doing really well right now and we’re all pushing each other. I’m just looking forward to the next one.”
